BIG COUNTRY DISCOGRAPHY
Version 2.10; 13 February 1998

==============================================================================
Foreword from Markus Schoeller for Version 2.10:
==============================================================================
At long last, this is the 2nd release of the internet Big Country discography.
Since Todd released the 1st version about three years ago, a lot has changed.
We have seen a new studio album, a number of live albums, compilation albums,
bootlegs and let us not forget the remasters of the first five plus one albums
and one of the guys releasing a first solo album. There could have been even
more output if the record companies were as eager to release the rare stuff as
the fans are eager to wait for it. Apart from that, other things have changed:
the Big Country mailinglist grew and moved around over the net, quite a few
Big Country WWW sites have seen the light of day and are today a tremendous
source of knowledge for every Big Country friend.

Collecting and buying Big Country stuff over the internet is quite easy today,
from private persons and from internet based record shops. All of these facts
also had some impact on Big Country's discography. On the one hand it grew
naturally with time, on the other hand collectors became aware of the obscure
and hard to get stuff. This made it necessary to bring Todd's discography
up-to-date.

It would have been nice if Todd had done the upgrading work, but unfortunately
he has not been reachable on the internet since summer 1996. Thus, I
volunteered to bring the discography to its current state.

I have changed some things in this discography. The most obvious is the
separation of the Skids discography into its own file. The others are the
inclusion of a bootleg and a tour programme section. The last two ideas are
borrowed from the WWW sites. I have also included, at the end, a list of the
Big Country web sites.

I want to close this foreword with a big thanks to all the participants of the
Big Country mailinglist. If you weren't around, a lot of the fantastic work
which has been done in the last few years by various people all over the world
wouldn't have been possible. To know that you are out there keeps us going. A
special thanks goes to Lewis Crow, Oliver Hunter, Mike Lynd, Rorie McIntosh,
and Robert Oliver for giving me permission to use their special discographies.
Lastly, I want to thank Todd Oberly again for the good job he did with the
first release, to which my work really pales.

Markus Schoeller for the Big Country mailinglist

==============================================================================
Foreword from Todd Oberly for Version 2.01:
==============================================================================
At long last, this is the 1st release of the internet Big Country discography.
This file is over 80K long, and should document all of their major and minor
releases, including Stuart Adamson's first commercial band, the Skids [please
be aware that I removed the Skids section from this discography (MS)]. It is
being released in a partially "incomplete" stage because 1) the size of it,
along with my sometimes odd schedule has delayed it for a long time, and 2) a
lot of people wanted to see it. I apologize to everyone who has been waiting
patiently.

My own collection has grown by leaps and bounds over the last year, but three
people initially contributed the framework for this discography: Markku
Haninnen and Glenn MacDonald for the Big Country sections and Stephen Mulrine
for the Skids sections. Thanks guys - I couldn't have done it without you!
I also want to thank Paul Bazylinski, who while auctioning off most of his
own collection was able to fill-in a bunch of holes. Some information for
compilation albums was borrowed from discographies maintained by John Relph
(XTC), Richard John (Duran Duran), and Al Crawford (Ultravox). Many thanks!

Please note that on a line-by-line basis, only one-third of the items listed
here were submitted by an actual owner. The remainder was pulled from mail-
order catalogs and Goldmine magazine ads which may or may not be accurate.
For practical purposes this should make no difference, as the entries for all
the major releases are fine...but in the case of some obscure radio shows
and promotional material, I make no guarantees. Question marks in the place
of months, years, etc., are simply blanks that need filled. A single ques-
tion mark means the information for that entry is not entirely clear. Three
question marks in an entry means that the item may not exist, or more likely,
that any details given may be incorrect (as in the case of a 7" record avail-
able from many countries, although I only have hard information on the UK or
US version). An asterix denotes bonus tracks or tracks that change sequence.

I hope you like it!

Notes: The poster sleeve is a picture of the band sitting on "blocks"
in front of a dark backdrop.

The shaped picture disk is very nifty. On the front is the Big
Country "map" cut in the shape of Scotland with the band logo,
a white border, and a painting of a train steaming past an old
building. The back is solid "map" graphics with the band logo
and a picture of the band - the same as on the other "Fields Of
Fire" releases. The record is ten-sided - it would be octagonal
if not for the train painting and the band picture, which juts
out to the side. This contains the original single version of
"Harvest Home." Given the size of the disk and that it runs with
33 1/3 rpm, there are people calling this a 12".

The labels on the regular UK "Fields Of Fire" 12" contain more
        "map" writing.

"The Tracks Of My Tears" is a live concert recording of a song first
        released by Smokey Robinson.

Notes: The German 1983 "Fields Of Fire"/"In A Big Country" calls itself
        a 2xA side single.

The 7" with unknown origin claims to be from the Mercury Big 1-
'Pinkpop' Label. "All Of Us" is in fact another version of
        "In A Big Country".

Notes: Might the original Canadian LP be self-titled?

The US LP and cassette switch "1000 Stars" and "Fields Of Fire."

The original release of the UK cassette contains four bonus
songs, with the 12" mixes being the "Alternative Mix" and the
"Pure Mix" respectively. Oddly, the text on the cassette sleeve
is printed both normally and reversed, and there may be an ori-
ginal release UK LP with the same printing on the inner sleeve.

There is some controvery about the actual release dates of the
original CD albums. Some people claim that they were released
earlier than 1987. The Dutch LP from 1983 states that the record
is also available on tape and CD. Can someone solve this?

The Australian LP claims to be an Australasian issue.

although this isn't printed on the packaging. "The Tracks Of My
Tears" was first released by Smokey Robinson.

The a-side of the picture disc contains the logo design from the
picture sleeve, and the b-side contains a different logo design.

Note: The Spectrum Music CD is a budget-priced re-release. Although
the CD itself seems fine, the packaging is done cheaply. It
looks like Spectrum made a color photocopy of the original art-
work and then printed that. Also, the booklet does not contain
the full lyrics, but only the first two and last two songs.
Spectrum apparently left out the center page that contains the
        rest of the songs.

3:58 Where The Rose Is Sown (Special AOR Remix)

Notes: The single version of "Where The Rose Is Sown" is supposed to
be a remix, but I'd say it's just an edit.

"Prairie Rose" was first released by Roxy Music.

The picture labels on the Canadian 12" are a rose on one side
and a band picture on the other.

Disappointingly, the UK gatefold is completely blank inside.
The first record in the double-pack is the actual UK 7" with its
picture sleeve. "Wonderland" and "In A Big Country" from the
second record were recorded live in Austin, Texas on 22 March
1984 for NBC Radio - The Source, and "Auld Lang Syne" was lifted
from the "Big Country Live" New Year's Eve 1983/4 Barrowlands
        concert video.

The "Special AOR Remix" appears to be nothing more than the sin-
gle version. This 12" promo runs at 33 1/3 RPM.

Notes: The picture disk has a large Big Country logo on the one side.

"Margos Theme" is a montage of several pieces of instrumental
music from parts 1 and 2 of the "Restless Natives" soundtrack.
"Highland Scenery" is basically the last 4 minutes of part 1,
beginning with some percussion and including the motorbike
chase and the "Do you believe in ghosts?" dialogue.

The b-side of the Japanese promo 12" is the song "Honey Thief"
        by Hipsway.

The b-side of the Italian promo 7" is a song by Level 42.

"Restless Natives" (without the fade-out) and "Home Came The
Angels" are both contained in "Restless Natives The Soundtrack
        Part 2."

Notes: The single version of "One Great Thing" is supposed to be a
remix, but sounds very similar to the album version. It, the
"Boston Mix," and the "Big Baad Country Mix" were all done by
        Walter Turbitt.

The insert pages in the 7" are stapled in the gatefold and
contain pictures of the band on stage.

The live versions of "Porrohman", "Chance", "Wonderland", and
"Inwards" were recorded in Austin, Texas on 22 March 1984 for
        NBC Radio - The Source.

The insert pages in the 12" are a "1986 Almanac & Discography"
stapled in the gatefold and include black and white pictures
(four big portraits and various tour photos), a list of UK tour
dates for The Seer Tour '86, and a 2-page discography. I did
borrow some items from it for this discography, but overall it
        is sloppy and sometimes misleading.

"Fields Of Fire," "In A Big Country," "Inwards," "Look Away,"
and "Wonderland" are all supposedly b-sides on another version.

3:47 The Big Country Interview (part one)
The Big Country Interview (part two)

Notes: The single version of "Hold The Heart" is supposed to be a re-
mix by Walter Turbitt, but again it sounds very much like the
        album version.

        "Honky Tonk Woman" was first released by the Rolling Stones;
this live version was recorded in 1986 at The Pier in New York
City. Does anybody know when this concert occurred? Might this
be the same show as the "Live In New York" video?

Part one of the interview is from the "Howard Stern Show". Part two
is from "New York Rock, WXRX Radio".

The "Hold The Heart (instrumental)" is not mentioned on the cover,
        but only on the label.

The version of "When A Drum Beats" on the Canadian CD5 (and pro-
bably the other Canadian releases and the similar UK CD single)
fades out nearly two minutes early! I don't understand why
anyone would butcher a song in this way, unless the British
Phonographic Institute once had a law limiting singles to under
twenty minutes and Vertigo used the same source tape. To my
knowledge, the only complete versions of "When A Drum Beats" are
on the UK "612" 12" singles.

Notes: "In A Big Country," "Where The Rose Is Sown," "Just A Shadow,"
"East Of Eden," and "Broken Heart (Thirteen Valleys)" are
radio edits and "Chance" is the extended version.

"Eiledon," "The Seer," and "Harvest Home" are bonus tracks on
the cassette and CD releases. The Japanese CD supposedly con-
        tains a fourth bonus track.

cardboard box with a blue compass on top. Also included
is a 73-page book including 15 pages of photos, a biogra-
phy in Japanese, a discography, lyrics, and chart notes
in English and Japanese, and some artwork from the album
liner notes. Part of the set - I'm not sure which part -
                comes wrapped in paper.)

                Black Skinned Blue Eyed Boys
                Prairie Rose
                Heart And Soul

Notes: All the "extended versions" are the usual UK 12" mixes.

"All Fall Together" is actually the instrumental "Giant."

"Tracks of My Tears" is the live version, "Lost Patrol" was re-
corded at the New Year's Eve Barrowlands show, and "Wonderland"
and "Thousand Yard Stare" were recorded at the Palace of Sports
in Moscow on 1 October 1988.

"The Tracks of My Tears" was first released by Smokey Robinson,
"Black Skinned Blue Eyed Boys" by Eddy Grant, and "Prairie Rose"
        by Roxy Music.

        4:44 Heart Of The World
3:22 Black Skinned Blue Eyed Boys
        4:06 Restless Natives

Notes: "Black Skinned Blue Eyed Boys" was first released by Eddy Grant.

The cover of the gatefold 12" is a picture of the band, including
a rare (I think) picture of the replacement drummer.

The poster is a picture of the "heart" design, which also appears
        on the picture CD.

The insert in the CD5 is only about an inch across, to better
        display the picture disc.

Notes: The digipak version is certainly limited, but hardly deluxe!
There is no reference to the title of the single, the album it
comes from, or the titles of any of the songs! Besides copy-
right information, the only text here is the band logo on the
front and spine, and across the back in very large letters when
the digipak is unfolded. Does anybody know how many were made?
There are voices which doubt the number of 5000 for this edition.
It seems to be the hardest to find item beneath the Japanese
        boxed set.

On the 7"s the A side runs with 45 RPM, the B side with 33 1/3 RPM.

Reptile" and "Beautiful People" CD singles in the #ed ltd.ed.
        digipak)

Notes: "Fly Like An Eagle" was written and sung by Bruce Watson.
"Fly Like An Eagle" is mastered at the wrong speed on both the
12" and the CD5. It is only available on the "In A Big Country"
        1995 sampler.

"Rockin' in the Free World" was recorded at the Town & Country
Club in London, and was first released by Neil Young. Does any-
body know exactly when this concert occurred?

Apparently all CD5s say that they are part 2 of a set, the first
being the "Republican Party Reptile" digipack. Maybe they were
never issued together. See the "Republican Party Reptile" single
        for details on the digipak.

Notes: Each of the four postcards is a portrait of a band member, in-
        cluding the replacement drummer.

Fleetwood Mac, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult,
"Cracked Actor" by David Bowie, and "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath.

The track listing on the Canadian promo CD5 is slightly in error.
The first track is actually the longer "Album Version," and the
second track is the shorter "Radio Edit."

Notes: This is a bootleg containing selected songs from the New Years'
Eve 1983/4 Barrowlands concert, and the quality is excellent.

The cover is a grainy shot of the band in a park, all huddled
together and each with an arm outstretched and their fingers in
        a snapping position!

One source says that only 400 copies exist.

The Juke Box Records has a yellow sleeve with the same black&white
poster. It gives altered names for the following songs: "One Thousand
        Stars", "Last Patrol", and "Change".

OFF THE RECORD SPECIAL 12-26-83 [Dec 1983]

LP: US 1983 [Westwood One OTR-12-26-83, OTR-1-2-84] (promo, gsleeve)

Notes: "Off The Record Special" is a series of brief interviews with
various musicians. Each side of the record contains segments
for a different week, and these shows aired during the weeks of
        26 December 1983 and 2 January 1984.

The first week of shows contains two segments with Tony Butler,
one talking about the way some musicians misuse synthesizers,
and the other about Stuart and Mark's unconventional guitar
        styles.

Note: "Earth News Radio" is a series of brief interviews with various
musicians. This radio show contains two interviews with Tony
Butler, which I believe are the same as on the "Off The Record
        Special" show above.

Note: This item contains two separate radio shows where the host plays
his or her band's material plus other popular songs. Mark
Brzezicki hosts the 30 January 1984 edition (and Huey Lewis hosts
the 6 Febuary show). It looks like at least two more items belong

BBC ROCK HOUR #514: ROCK & ROLL GOES TO THE GRAMMIES [Apr 1984]

LP: US 1984 [London Wavelength BC 514] (promo, piclabel, gsleeve,
                cue sheet)
        4:23 Fields Of Fire (live)
        4:04 Harvest Home (live)
4:23 In a Big Country (live)

Notes: This one-hour radio show aired during the week of 1-7 April 1984.
The show was assembled to celebrate UK artists (actually four
UK bands - Big Country, The Eurythmics, Culture Club, and Musical
Youth - and one Canadian band - Men Without Hats) sweeping the
        "best new artist" Grammy category.

These three songs were recorded at the Hammersmith Palais in Lon-
don, and not at the actual Grammy Awards, but Big Country did
actually perform live there, did they not?

Stuart begins "Fields Of Fire" by singing a line from "Boy About
        Town" by The Jam!

The picture label is a cartoon bulldog wearing headphones and a
        BBC necktie.

Notes: These songs were recorded by Band Aid, a non-profit collaboration
of British musicians who donated all proceeds to assist famine
relief in Ethiopia. Big Country is not mentioned anywhere on the
packaging, but they make a brief comment on "Feed the World."

The record containing "One Year On (Feed The World)" probably
has nothing to do with Big Country, but I'm including it because
        I'm not sure.

INTERVIEW PICTURE DISC [??? 1986]

LP: UK 1986 [Baktabak Records BAK 2122] (ltd.ed. picdisc, die-cut sleeve)

Notes: This is a long interview from the Seer-era with Stuart and Mark
talking about the songs on the album, their political and social
views, the changes the band has gone through, modern day heroes,
and all sorts of things. It's easily superior to the "Hold The
Heart" 12" interview, although with low recording levels, tape
hiss, surface noise (on my copy at least) and thick accents, it
        is often very rough listening.

Pictures of Stuart in concert are on the front and back of the
        record.
