TOP 20 On Big Country Read our top twenty on Big Country and find out all you need to know about the best Scottish band around! 1. Stuart Adamson, singer and guitarist of Big Country, was born on April 4, 1958 in Manchester. When he was still very young, his family moved up to Dunfermline in Scotland, which he considers his home. 2. Tony Butler was born on February 13, 1957, in Hammersmith, London. Mark Brzezicki was born in Slough on June 21, 1957. Bruce Watson was born in Ontario, Canada on March 11, 1961. 3. Stuart's first live performance was at the Crossgates Institution in Dunfermline. Bruce first appeared live at the Lady of Lourdes Chapel, Dunfermline. 4. Stuart's first job was as an accountant. After 4 weeks he left - before he got the sack! He then became a Production Controller in a factory. 5. Tony Butler's first appearance in front of an audience was at the Questors Theatre in Ealing. Mark had his first live performance at Slough Working Men's Club. 6. The first group that Stuart joined was called Tattoo, a local Dunfermline group. His next group was The Skids, where he was the lead guitarist. 7. Stuart once said, "Punk is the greatest thing ever". 8. The Skids had their first hit in February, 1979, with "Into The Valley" which got to number 10. Although they built up a very loyal following, this was their highest ever chart position. Their last single was in December 1980 - "Women In Winter". 9. Richard Jobson, the singer, and Russell Webb, The Skids' bassist, now have their own group, The Armoury Show. 10. After The Skids, Stuart decided to form his own band. He recruited the services of guitarist Bruce Watson. 11. Bruce and Stuart were asked to do a demo tape for Phonogram and two of the session musicians they hired were Tony Butler and Mark Brzezicki. The four of them got on so well together that Tony and Mark decided to stay - Big Country had been formed. 12. Tony and Mark were already very experienced. They had been in a group with Pete Townsend's brother, and played on The Pretenders' "Back On The Chain Gang". In fact, The Pretenders were so impressed by Tony that they offered him a permanent job in the group - he declined. 13. Big Country now set about building the base for their climb to the top. Their first single was "Harvest Home" and was released in the autumn of 1982. They began touring the country, concentrating heavily on Scotland, and soon had many fans all over. 14. The Big Country image was now very strong - checked shirts, jeans or dungarees and guitars that sounded like bagpipes. 15. "Fields Of Fire" was the next single. An excellent production job by Steve Lillywhite ensured this single a lot of airplay and brought Big Country to everyone's attention. 16. "In A Big Country" really made the band - there was no stopping them now. Their first album "The Crossing went to No. 1 and every single since has charted in the Top Thirty. 17. Stuart is married to Sandra. They live in Dunfermline where he is often seen speeding about on his motorbike. 18. "Steel Town" was Big Country's second album. "Where The Rose Is Sown", "Just A Shadow", and "East Of Eden" were all hit singles from it. 19. Tony Butler's wife is called Jacqueline. 20. Big Country still keep up the traditions they started out with relying on their music rather than gimmicks. Their live concerts are considered to be amongst the best in Britain, mainly due to the amazing link there always seems to be between the crowd and the group at a Big Country concert. |
